Trap at 140 BPM feels slower than house at 124. Why? Half-time. In trap, the snare lands on beat 3 instead of beats 2 and 4 — so the perceived pulse is 70 BPM even though the hi-hats tick at 140. Dubstep does the same.
"Tempo is what the metronome says. Groove is what your head nods to. They're often not the same number."
This is why genre tempo arguments never end: a 140 BPM trap beat and a "70 BPM" beat with double-time hats can be literally identical. What matters is where the snare lands.
Energy ≠ tempo. Raising BPM doesn't raise energy — density does. A sparse 174 DnB intro is calmer than a stacked 90 BPM boom bap drop. If your track feels flat, add layers and drum density before touching the tempo.
