You don't need a vocal booth or a $5,000 microphone to record great vocals. This guide covers mic placement, DIY soundproofing, gain staging, and performance techniques that separate bedroom vocals from broadcast-quality recordings — all on a beginner's budget.
Most bedroom recordings sound amateurish not because of the microphone, but because of three fixable problems: room reflections (echo and early delays that blur the vocal), improper mic technique (distance and angle change the tone mid-take), and gain staging mistakes (recording too loud or too soft, which no EQ can salvage). Fix these three and your vocal quality jumps immediately.

You don't need expensive acoustic panels. A blanket fort or small reflection filter works surprisingly well.
The reflection filter test: Record a vocal take, then play it back and listen for echo or slap-back (delayed repetitions of the vocal). If you hear it, add more treatment. If the vocal sits dry and clear, you're good.
For home recording, a large-diaphragm condenser microphone (LDC) is the standard choice. These are sensitive, detailed, and forgiving of room acoustics compared to dynamic mics.

Position the microphone 6 to 8 inches from your mouth. This distance is the sweet spot where:
Point the microphone slightly to the side of your mouth (30–45 degrees off center), not straight at it. This reduces plosives — harsh bursts of air on "P" and "B" sounds. If you use a pop filter (recommended), you can afford to be more direct.
Gain staging is how loud you record the signal coming from the mic. It's more important than the microphone itself. A weak, properly recorded signal can be fixed in the mix. A clipped (distorted) signal cannot.
The -6 dB rule: Most modern DAWs use 32-bit floating-point recording, so clipping is almost impossible after the audio interface (the mic preamp is where it matters). Set your mic preamp so peaks are around -6 dB on the meter, and you'll never clip. Period.
Once the signal is clean, the performance matters. A great vocal with perfect gain staging beats a mediocre vocal recorded "perfectly."
Pros record 8–15 takes per vocal line, not because they're looking for perfect, but because variety gives options in the mix. Each take has slightly different tone, timing, and emotion. Comp the best parts together.
