Parallel compression blends a heavily squashed copy of a sound with the original, dry copy. You get the punch and density of extreme compression without losing the natural dynamics of the source. It's how drum busses get loud and huge without sounding flat.
Before parallel compression makes sense, a quick refresher: a compressor is a plugin that automatically turns a sound down when it gets louder than a level you set (the threshold). How much it turns it down is set by the ratio — a 4:1 ratio means every 4dB the signal goes over the threshold, only 1dB comes out. Push the ratio and gain reduction hard enough and the loud and quiet parts of a sound get squashed close together, which is what makes something feel "dense" or "in your face" — but also flattens its natural dynamics if you push too far.
Normal compression processes a signal and replaces it — the compressed version is all you hear. Parallel compression instead runs a heavily compressed copy of the sound on a separate channel, then mixes that copy back in underneath the original, untouched (dry) signal.
The name "New York compression" comes from the technique's history on analog consoles in New York recording studios in the 1960s–70s, where engineers would send drums to an aux bus, crush that bus into oblivion, and blend it back with the clean drum mix. The nickname stuck even though everyone uses it now, everywhere.
Both paths hit the master fader together. You control the blend, not a single processed signal.
Why blend instead of just compressing the original harder? Because heavy compression on its own kills transients — the sharp initial "hit" of a kick or snare that gives it impact. If you crush the only copy of the drum bus by 15dB, the transient gets squashed along with everything else and the drums lose their punch, even though they measure "louder."

When you blend a dry signal with a heavily compressed copy, here's what happens to each part of the sound:

No parallel bus in your DAW? Some plugins (and most limiters) have a built-in "dry/wet" or "mix" knob that does the exact same thing internally — the plugin compresses the signal fully, then blends the result with the untouched original for you. If you see a mix knob on a compressor or limiter, that's parallel compression in a single plugin.
